In response to the first article quoted - the one about civil liberties - I have posted the comment below just now. Let's see whether it gets put up. Common law is made by judges. If it's made by Parliament, it's statute law. Melanie Phillips says here that common law has been eroded by judges' gaining more power; that is actually a contraditiction, but she probably didn't realise it because she doesn't understand what "common law" means. I suggest she research more thoroughly before she writes articles in future.
