Hastiness and superficiality are the psychic diseases of the twentieth century, and more than anywhere else this disease is reflected in the press.

Hitler, the BNP and the Tories PDF Print E-mail

One of the problems with the Daily Mail website is their tendency to re-write headlines and articles whenever it suits them - without ever acknowledging that any changes have been made. This means that sometimes you get a headline next to a picture that doesn't seem to make much sense, like this for example:

BNP and the Tories

So the headline and the blurb talks about the Tories, whilst showing a picture of BNP leader Nick Griffin with the 'BNP' logo clearly standing out. Is it that easy to confuse the Conservative Party with the BNP? Looking at the link to the article it seems clear that originally the article seemed to be about the Labour Party pandering to far-right voters:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1196195/Labour-vows-Britons-council-house-queue-bid-win-voters-far-Right.html

The original content of the article - as made pretty clear by the link - was about council housing:

British-born families will jump ahead of immigrants and asylum seekers in the queue for council housing under far-reaching plans unveiled today.

Gordon Brown will tear up the rules in a bid to win back Labour's working class heartlands, where support has grown for the far-Right British National Party.

The 'British homes for British workers' plan, if it succeeds, will force councils to end the unfairness which sees immigrants with large families vault to the top of the council house list.

However, this has now completely disappeared to be replaced by Tories complaining about Labour spending etc. Why is this? Why has the article been changed without acknowledgement? It means that the top of your browser talks about the original content, whilst the article does not even mention anything stated in the headline. Perhaps James Chapman realised he couldn't back up his BNP claim that somehow immigrants are unfairly 'vault[ing] to the top of the council house list'.

In fact it almost seems that the original article wanted to point out that Labour were trying to win votes from the BNP and the Daily Mail wanted to make damn sure that they didn't. They therefore attacked Labour and repeated a few BNP myths like the one above as well as providing a helpful BNP information box:

BNP information box provided by the Daily Mail

Perhaps James had a change of heart and didn't want to be promoting the BNP, or the Tories challenging Labour over money was more interesting than 'British houses for British people'. Either way, what is left behind is a dishonest mess that sums up the Mail's closed and unaccountable style of gutter journalism (along with the racist undertone they work so hard to keep simmering).

In other news Hitler makes a welcome return to the Mail website (1352 results returned searching the Mail website for 'Hitler'). In a shocking turn of events the genocidal super-racist has become the latest victim of the 'PC-brigade' as WWII enthusiasts attending WWII themed weekend have been banned from dressing up as Hitler or an SS soldier:

Visitors to a railway attraction's Second World War-themed weekend were banned from dressing up as Hitler or SS officers.

They were invited to don 1940s-style clothes, both British and German, for Severn Valley Railway's re-enactment yesterday and today.

But the Swastika, Nazi uniforms and Hitler impersonations were barred from the popular tourist draw in Worcestershire because organisers feared they would cause offence.

Naturally Daily Mail readers were aghast as another case of Political Correctness gone made, complaining that it was perfectly harmless and inoffensive to dress up as their favourite racist dictator. John Smith (original name) is quick to point out that Hitler is about as offensive as coughing:

It seems that coughing could cause offence nowadays. Idiots.

Whilst Mark is now refusing to attend because of the ban:

Naturally not all comments are managing to get into the green - largely because some of them have the audacity to point out that Hitler and Nazism was a terrible thing:

There is NO reason for visitors dressed in 'fancy dress' to don the uniforms of genocidal maniacs. This is not about being PC. It's about respect for the millions of Britons, Jews, gays and lesbians, gypsies, Poles, disabled, mentally ill etc murdered by the lunatics who wore the uniform in the past. Anyone wearing one should question their motives... Click to rate Rating 75

Good. It is time the Nazis were thrown into the cess pit of history. A shame we can't do the same to their modern counterparts. Click to rate Rating 77

Banning dressing up as one of the biggest racial mass-murderers of all time: it's PC gone mad. Here's hoping Richard Littlejohn can bring us a wonderfully crafted sketch involving Dad's Army tomorrow pointing out that life is terrible in these times ruled by the 'diversity Nazis'.
