I can utterly sympathise with Brown. He's an intelligent man and is as informed about the press as anyone can be. I don't doubt for a second that he heard the ghastly ring of the tabloid press in what she was saying, knew that her fears were ungrounded and merely stoked up by the Mail et al.'s screeching. It's understandable that this would get his blood up, especially if he needs to respond to her publicly, and is already stressed enough by the campaign trail. 'Bigot' might have been a touch strong, but I completely understand the sentiment. He was strung out and being confronted with Little Englander, tabloid-pushed nonsense.
