When distant and unfamiliar and complex things are communicated to great masses of people, the truth suffers a considerable and often a radical distortion. The complex is made over into the simple, the hypothetical into the dogmatic, and the relative into an absolute.

What makes my skin crawl the most is the automatic extension of 'celebrity hatred' rights from one situation to another. Everyone knows that whenever a celeb has put on a bit of weight people feel entitled to lay into them with a vehemence they would never use on a person they knew. Somehow celebrities are exempt from standards of decency and don't care what people say about them. I had hoped that in this case people would have been a bit more understanding towards Jordan. Just because she's a celebrity doesn't mean she's not hurt by the kind of grief she's getting in the comments.
